Emergency boarding is still available at Wichita Animal Services and the Kansas Humane Society for those needing assistance. (See below.)

————————————————————————-

Due to the recent tornado activity in the Wichita area, the Kansas Humane Society is working in collaboration with Wichita Animal Services and Sedgwick County Animal Response Team to provide care and shelter for the city’s displaced pets.

Sedgwick County Animal Response Team is nearly at emergency boarding capacity and is referring the public to the Kansas Humane Society and Wichita Animal Services for assistance.  Both the Kansas Humane Society and Wichita Animal Services are currently accepting displaced animals according to community need and available resources.

The Kansas Humane Society is anticipating needing additional space at our facility as Wichita, Salina and other Kansas communities deal with the effects of displaced pets over the next few days.

In order to save more animal lives, the Kansas Humane Society is offering 50% off all adoption fees Sunday, April 15, and Monday, April 16.  By having more animals adopted out, our facility will have more room to provide emergency assistance and care for our region’s displaced pets.

If you need assistance, please contact Wichita Animal Services at (316) 350-3366 or the Kansas Humane Society at (316) 524-9196.  Both facilities are open 1 – 5 p.m. on Sunday, 11 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. Monday – Saturday.  Please note that not all Red Cross and other disaster shelters accept pets and plan accordingly for the care of your human and pet families.  More information on disaster preparedness pet planning is available at the ASPCA’s website.

Styling Spot – KHS Dog of the Week

Spot, 6 year old male, border collie mix

Hey everybody! My name is Spot, and I’m a 6 year old, male, border collie mix. I’m all about fun times and hanging out with by human buddies. We could spend so much time just TENNIS BALL! Sorry, someone threw a ball and I got excited. Where was I? Oh, we could spend a lot of time hanging out and watching movies. I’d prefer to be in a house with no kids. You should come down to KHS today and throw me a tennis ball. Until then, you can view my adoption page

Henry, 6 year old male, domestic long hair

Meow! That’s hi in cat language. My name is Henry and I’m a 6 year old male, domestic long hair. I’ll be saying hi a lot if you take me home. See I’m a fun and loving cat. Got a free toy? Not anymore, I’m playing with it. Got an open spot next to you on the couch? Not anymore, I’m purring right beside you. I’m best suited in a home with no dogs. You should come down to KHS and visit with me today. I’ll be sure to greet you when you do. Until then, you can always view my profile

New KHS scholarship program helps people and pets stay together

We are thrilled to announce our new Let’s Stay Together scholarship program underwritten by Banfield Charitable Trust.

Every day we take in dogs and cats because of behavioral issues their owners were unprepared for. Our Let’s Stay Together scholarship program lets us help these struggling pet owners keep the pets they love.  How?

Thanks to Banfield Charitable Trust’s help, we can now provide a limited number of scholarships to Wichita pet owners who are considering giving up their pets to the Kansas Humane Society.

The scholarship program allows us to provide free resources that Wichita pet owners need to keep their pets including one-on-one counseling, obedience training classes and more.

With an individualized plan for owners to help them make positive changes towards their care and retention of their pets, we’re going to save more animal lives, keep more pets and people together and decrease euthanasia in our community.

Adoption Success – Butterfly

Butterfly, Adopted 2/16/2011 Some animals just love to play around. They have their own favorite: toy, place to play, and person to play with. That’s part of their personality that makes them, well…them. This example is summed up well by Butterfly. She is nearly 2 years old, and after her adoption in February of 2011, she took a liking to tennis balls while the family took a liking to her.

“Butterfly loves playing with her tennis ball. Thank you KHS for my sweet little girl.”

Loving Barney – KHS Cat of the Week

Barney, 8 year old female, domestic medium hair  Meow! I’m Barney, and I’m an 8 year old female, domestic medium hair. See, all those younger cats think they know everything. For example, they see a play string, but I know there’s a hand on the other side of the play string. Though I don’t care, I love that play string!!! I could play with it all day. I might be a little shy when I first meet you, but I just want to make sure we’ll fit together. You should stop by KHS today and give the play string a whirl with me. Until then, you can view my adoption page

Magnificent Marshall – KHS Dog of the Week

Marshall, 3 year old, male, Terrier, Cairn / Mix  Hi, I’m Marshall! One of the weirdest things keeps happening to me. People keep calling me Toto instead of Marshall. Apparently I resemble the dog from the Wizard of Oz or something. I’m much cooler than him anyways. I’m a 3 year old male, Terrier, Cairn/mix. I really like being around people and playing with toys. You should stop by KHS and see your movie star today! Until then, you can view my adoption page
