Externships (College Student and DVM)
The Kansas Humane society believes that spay/ neuter programs are an essential part of the plan to decrease the number of homeless animals. Through our unique externship program we are able to teach the basics: Animal handling, basic physical examination, basic diagnostics (skin scraping, ear cytology/ swabs, PCV/ TP, clotting times, fecal examination, well tests for HW and Leukemia), anesthetic protocols and administration (pre-surgical, induction, maintenance and recovery), appropriate patient / surgeon prep, aseptic technique, and soft tissue surgical procedures and techniques (OHE, Orchiectomies, and possibly umbilical hernia repair).

To participate in this program the extern must be attending an accredited School of Veterinary Medicine or have successfully completed the NAVLE and be willing to abide by the expectations set forth by KHS for extern students.

There is a fee of $1,000 for 7 days for DVMs and reduced fee of $200/ 7 days for students. Externs with minimal surgical experience are encouraged to perform a 2 week externship.
