Our Services

"No man can be condemned for owning a dog. As long as he has a dog, he has a friend; and the poorer he gets, the better friend he has."

About Us

The Kansas Humane Society is a private, non-profit organization that receives 18,000 animals each year from citizens unable or unwilling to care for them. Protecting pets since 1888, the Society receives no government, national humane association or United Way funding and depends entirely on private donations and adoption fees.

We are an open admission shelter - all owned animals are accepted regardless of history. Whether sick or well, friendly or aggressive, no owned animal is turned away.

Of these, most are dogs and cats, though we do accept other small pets such as guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, and birds. We were established to serve all companion animals and, at the Kansas Humane Society, these animals find concerned and kind staff and volunteers who give each animal the best care possible.

In addition to adoption services, we also provide public education programs, pet visits to nursing homes, and a retail store. These services are carried out by a small staff and 500 active volunteers.

Our Vision

To end the euthanasia of all healthy and treatable animals.

Our Mission

To set the standard in care and adoption services for pets while educating the community in the ethical and responsible treatment of companion animals.
