Intake Fees
We suggest an amount of $5 to $50 for animals relinquished; however, no pet will be turned away because of an ownerβs inability to pay. All donations are greatly appreciated and help to offset a portion of the cost of caring for the 16,000 pets we receive each year.
Giving Your Pet to KHS Animal Shelter
Bringing your pet to the Kansas Humane Society animal shelter can be a difficult decision to make. We would like you to know that we understand how hard it can be to relinquish a beloved pet and appreciate your choice to surrender your animal responsibly so that he or she will be safe and humanely cared for. As a private, nonprofit organization dependent on community contributions, we request a donation when an animal is admitted to us.
If your pet is placed for adoption, we will make every reasonable effort to find your pet(s) a new home. We cannot make any guarantee that your pet(s) will be placed for adoption or be adopted. Other options we may explore for your pet include breed-rescue groups, transfer to another shelter, or humane euthanasia. You may choose to reclaim your pet through our Reclaim Program in the event that your pet is not a candidate for our adoption program. Please ask an Admissions staff member for details.
Admissions at the Murfin Animal Care Campus
One of the best features of the Murfin Animal Care Campus is how animals are first admitted to the Kansas Humane Society and Wichita Animal Services. All pets being relinquished by their owners will go directly to the KHS Intake Department where they will receive a thorough evaluation and necessary vaccinations. All lost or stray animals are admitted to Wichita Animal Services, where they will stay to give their owners time to find them. If an animal is not reclaimed, animals may be transferred to the Kansas Humane Society as available.
Prior to adoption, all dogs and cats will be spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated in our medical clinic. Unfortunately during our busy summer season, when we admit nearly 1,500 pets a month, we are unable to guarantee that all animals will be transferred. We are working diligently to continue to save as many animal lives as possible in our animal shelter. This transfer system allows each organization to focus on its strengths, increases the chance that lost pets will be reunited with their owners, and ensures that every animal adopted from the Murfin Animal Care Campus is spayed or neutered, ultimately decreasing the number of homeless pets in our community.
